Civil Engineering Technician – Construction Observation
Location: Fairfield, Iowa, and surrounding areas (local travel required)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly
Schedule: 40-hour workweek; occasional evening or weekend work as needed

Position Overview
We are seeking a Civil Engineering Technician to support our project managers with a primary focus on construction observation. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, communicating with contractors and project stakeholders, and observing for compliance with project drawings and specifications.
While the emphasis of this position is construction observation, the technician will also assist with other project-related tasks during off-season and weather-related gaps in construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform construction observation for a variety of civil engineering projects, including:
- Streets and roadways
- Municipal water and wastewater systems
- Site development and similar infrastructure projects
- Observe construction activities to verify general conformance with plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Document daily construction activities, quantities, and notable issues
- Communicate with contractors, project owners, and project managers regarding construction progress and field conditions
- Assist with field measurements, quantity tracking, and pay application support
- Participate in field surveys and basic data collection as needed
- Support project managers with technical and administrative tasks related to project delivery
- Maintain compliance with company policies and project procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Experience or interest in construction observation and an interest in the design of civil infrastructure projects
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and specifications, or the desire and ability to learn
- Strong communication skills and a professional demeanor when interacting with clients and contractors
- A basic knowledge of the use of AutoCAD and Civil 3D, or the desire and ability to learn
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites
Preferred (but not required)
- Prior experience with civil construction, inspection, or surveying
- Experience working on municipal or public infrastructure projects
Working Conditions
- Combination of office and outdoor field work
- Field work may require walking one or more miles per day and lifting up to 50 pounds
- Exposure to active construction sites and varying weather conditions
